ALDI is preparing to open a new store in Cordele inside the former Harveys Supermarket space at 1011 East 16th Avenue. The store’s Google Maps business listing currently shows October 8, 2025, as the opening date, but ALDI has not confirmed this through its own website. On ALDI’s official store page, the Cordele location is still marked simply as “opening soon.”
Cordele Square, the shopping center where the store sits, was developed sometime between 1968 and 1972. Aerial images confirm the center was standing by 1972, though the large anchor space now occupied by ALDI was not part of that initial build. That structure appears between the 1972 and 1981 aerials, placing its construction during that period.
Location
The store is part of Cordele Square, a shopping center that has served the community for over five decades. While the center has gone through changes in tenants, its location along East 16th Avenue has kept it active within Cordele’s commercial corridor.

The Harveys supermarket once anchored the property but eventually closed, leaving the space vacant. ALDI’s renovation brings the anchor spot back into use, restoring a key part of the shopping center’s retail mix.
Company background
ALDI, founded in Germany in 1946, now operates more than 2,300 stores across the United States. The company has steadily expanded its presence in Georgia and across the Southeast.
Its growth strategy often involves reusing existing supermarket buildings rather than constructing new ones from the ground up. The Cordele project follows that model, with ALDI stepping into a space once operated by Harveys, a banner of Southeastern Grocers. While Harveys’ exact closure date in Cordele is unclear, the store was listed as permanently closed before ALDI’s renovation began.
