ALDI will officially open its new Prince Frederick location on September 10 at 429 Solomons Island Road North. The store is part of the new Armory Square development, bringing fresh retail options to a site that has been vacant since the early 2010s. For decades, the property was home to Calvert Middle School, which moved to Chesapeake Boulevard in 2010. The old building was demolished two years later, leaving behind open fields until work began on the current shopping center.
Construction
Armory Square broke ground in May 2024 with plans for over 110,000 square feet of retail space. ALDI is one of the anchor tenants, joined by national names such as Michaels, Ace Hardware, Dash In, and Jersey Mike’s. The grocery store is taking shape on the front section of the property, in the same spot where the school’s athletic fields once stood. Construction has advanced steadily, and the new store is scheduled to welcome shoppers on September 10, 2025.

Location
The development sits along Solomons Island Road (Routes 2/4), the busiest commercial corridor in Prince Frederick. Safeway is located directly across the street, giving the town’s shoppers another grocery option within steps of each other. The location was long considered a prime redevelopment site because of its highway frontage and proximity to existing retail. What was once a quiet school campus and football field is now becoming a hub of national retailers.
Company
ALDI, founded in Germany, has expanded aggressively across the United States with a reputation for streamlined stores and discount prices. The chain now operates more than 2,300 U.S. locations and has been steadily adding stores in Maryland. The new Prince Frederick store continues that push, giving Calvert County residents access to the chain’s familiar mix of fresh produce, meat, dairy, and pantry staples.
