A new Costco will open near Crossgates Mall in Guilderland on August 6, 2026. The warehouse will become the first Costco serving New York’s Capital Region. The site once contained homes, wooded land, and quiet residential streets near Western Avenue. Years of planning, lawsuits, property purchases, and demolition preceded construction. These images show how the neighborhood gradually disappeared as the large retail project took shape.
Looking east from Rapp Road, the land between the road and the future Costco remained heavily wooded in May 2022. Dense trees and brush blocked the view toward the residential streets beyond. The Costco warehouse would later rise farther east, where houses still occupied the project site.
In August 2024, the future Costco property still contained a small residential neighborhood surrounded by heavy tree cover. Several houses remained along the internal streets between Western Avenue and Crossgates Mall Road. The wooded strip beside Rapp Road was also intact, while Crossgates Mall and its parking lots dominated the land immediately northeast.
By September 2025, the wooded buffer and former residential area had been cleared for construction. Heavy equipment was grading the large site, while utility work and early foundation activity were underway. From Rapp Road, the once-screened property had opened into a broad construction zone for the future Costco.
By July 2025, most homes and trees had disappeared from the future Costco property. A large concrete foundation marked the warehouse footprint near Crossgates Mall Road. Crews were also shaping parking areas, internal roads, and utility connections across the cleared site. A few buildings still remained along Western Avenue, while separate construction continued on the neighboring oncology center.
The area has changed dramatically since homes and dense tree cover occupied the future Costco property. With construction nearing completion, the new warehouse is scheduled to open on August 6, 2026. Its arrival will complete a long transformation beside Crossgates Mall and bring the Albany area its first Costco.
