New Tom Thumb is Coming to Dallas County—Construction Underway!

Construction is moving along for the new Tom Thumb grocery store in Sunnyvale, Texas, located at the corner of Belt Line Road and East Town East Boulevard. Scheduled to open by December 2025, this project represents a significant step forward in improving grocery access for eastern Dallas County.

While the store is based in Sunnyvale, it will also serve neighboring areas like Mesquite, Balch Springs, and parts of Seagoville, where full-service supermarket options remain limited.

In 2001, the intersection of Beltline Road and East Town East Blvd was surrounded by open farmland and sparse development. This image shows the rural nature of the area before the construction of the Gateway Park retail center and the upcoming Tom Thumb store.

A Major Project for a Growing Region

The new Tom Thumb will cover approximately 58,200 square feet and offer a full-service grocery department, a drive-thru pharmacy, a Starbucks kiosk, a fuel station, and Drive-Up & Go pickup.

Groundbreaking began in November 2024, and by May 2025, satellite imagery captured major progress: foundation work was nearly complete, and structural framing was well underway. The store is the anchor of the larger Gateway Park retail center, expected to bring even more retail and dining to the corridor.

To support this growth, the town is working with regional agencies to install a new traffic signal at the Belt Line and Town East intersection.

Still on Schedule for Late 2025

According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction is set to finish by December 15, 2025. So far, there have been no delays, and the site remains highly active.

This Sunnyvale store is part of a broader expansion by Tom Thumb’s parent company, Albertsons, which is also developing locations in Sanger and Midlothian. A previously planned site in Dallas’ Red Bird neighborhood was cancelled in late 2024.

For residents across southeastern Dallas County, this new store will fill a longtime gap in fresh food and pharmacy access.

Site Evolution and Development

Historically, the area was dominated by open farmland with minimal development. Over the past two decades, Sunnyvale has transitioned into a suburban hub, attracting commercial and residential growth.
