Location
Southland Shopping Center is located at 941 SW 24th Street, fronting Marina Mile Boulevard (State Road 84) just west of I-95. With nearly 2,000 feet of highway frontage, the plaza has long been one of the more visible retail sites in Fort Lauderdale. The property covers about 14.8 acres, with roughly 166,700 square feet of leasable space and parking for close to 1,000 cars.
Current tenants include Bealls, Dunkin, and Wendy’s, along with smaller service shops. The plaza sits across from Lauderdale Memorial Park, surrounded by neighborhoods that filled in during the mid-to-late 20th century. Ownership shifted in early 2022, when RMS Properties purchased the center for $16.8 million, signaling reinvestment in the site even before ALDI’s entry.
Historic Perspective
The land was mostly wooded in 1952, with only scattered homes nearby. By 1969, the shopping center was already built in the same rectangular footprint it maintains today, its vast parking lot designed for the car-centered growth of suburban Fort Lauderdale.
Through the 1970s and 1980s, Winn-Dixie anchored the grocery trade here while the center served as a neighborhood hub. By the 1990s and 2000s, surrounding subdivisions had fully developed, and fast-food pads and services filled in around the plaza. Into the 2020s, the center remained active but was aging, with Winn-Dixie seeing lighter traffic.
