Wegmans to Open First Store Near Pittsburgh in Cranberry Township

Wegmans has officially confirmed plans to build its first store in the Pittsburgh region. The 115,000-square-foot store will rise just north of Cool Springs Drive, in the Cranberry Springs development, next to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex and near the I‑79/Route 228 interchange. But with an expected opening in 2027, many are asking: what’s the real timeline, and what else is coming?

What to Expect at the New Site

Wegmans purchased a 13-acre parcel in the Cranberry Springs development, which has slowly filled out over the past decade with restaurants, hotels, and the Penguins’ practice facility. The new store will sit on a cleared, undeveloped lot north of the roundabout at Cool Springs Drive and High Crescent Road. This location offers prime visibility from I‑79 and proximity to high-income suburbs like Seven Fields, Wexford, and Adams Township.

The development is expected to bring 400–500 new jobs to the region and introduce the chain’s signature mix of prepared meals, bakery, cheese shop, and its fan-favorite store-brand products. The project is still in the early planning stages, with municipal approvals and permitting expected to take up to a year before construction can begin.

Wegmans’ Westernmost Push in Pennsylvania

This will be Wegmans’ westernmost location in the state, with the closest store currently in Erie. Until now, the grocery chain has focused on eastern and central Pennsylvania, citing distribution limitations. But with a new hub in Richmond, Virginia now operational, the company is ready to move into untapped territory.

The announcement ends a decades-long wait for Pittsburgh-area fans who’ve been lobbying the company for years. Local excitement was instant—comment sections and forums lit up with reactions like “dream come true” and “finally.”

Once construction begins, it will take approximately 12 to 15 months to complete. If all goes smoothly, Cranberry Township could be welcoming Wegmans by late 2027.
