A new RaceTrac convenience store is planned for 1320 Federal Road in Houston, Texas. Construction is expected to begin in October 2025 and is anticipated to be completed by February 2026. The site, currently used by Watco Companies, will be transformed into an 8,702-square-foot retail and fueling destination.
The project is officially listed under the name “RaceTrac Watco,” referencing the site’s most recent tenant. RaceTrac is known for combining fuel service with a wide range of snacks, drinks, and food options inside their large-format stores.
This location has seen several transformations over the decades
Back in the 1930s, this area was mostly untouched, surrounded by trees and farmland. By 1964, a large commercial building had appeared on the site, suggesting the arrival of retail activity. Aerial images from 1966 show a fully developed property, likely housing a grocery or discount retailer with adjacent storefronts.
Through the early 2000s, the building was subdivided and used by smaller businesses, including a medical clinic and a furniture store. At some point, the structure was removed, and the property was repurposed as a truck or freight logistics site. Most recently, it served as a terminal or staging area for Watco Companies.
Now, a fresh start with RaceTrac on the way
The upcoming RaceTrac marks a return to retail use for this high-traffic corridor in East Houston. Located just south of Market Street and minutes from I-10, the store will be well positioned to serve both commuters and nearby residents.
Though construction won’t begin until late 2025, the project represents a major shift in how the property is used. From early retail roots to industrial logistics and back again, the evolution of 1320 Federal Rd reflects the changing face of the Northshore area.
