H-E-B is bringing a third store to San Marcos with plans to begin construction in September 2025. The new location will sit at the intersection of Interstate 35 and East McCarty Lane, just south of Academy Sports and near the San Marcos Premium Outlets. When finished, it will become the largest and most advanced H-E-B in the city.
The store will cover 118,945 square feet and cost $30 million to build. H-E-B expects the project to be completed in late 2026. This new addition reflects the company’s ongoing growth in Central Texas and its strategy to build flagship locations in high-traffic areas.
A Full-Service Store with Texas Touches
Shoppers can look forward to the city’s first in-store True Texas BBQ restaurant, a popular feature at H-E-B’s newer sites. The store will also offer home delivery, curbside pickup, a drive-thru pharmacy, and full-service departments like a bakery, tortilleria, meat market, seafood counter, deli, and Sushiya.
Additional features include a large Blooms floral section, beer and wine sampling stations, and a Meal Simple selection area. Outside, the store will have a fuel station and car wash. The Texas Front Porch section will cater to outdoor needs, including grilling and gardening products.
A Century of Change at the Site
Historic aerials from 1938 show the project site as flat, undeveloped farmland. Dirt paths crisscrossed the area where East McCarty Lane and I-35 now run. There were no commercial buildings, paved roads, or suburban neighborhoods in sight.
Over the decades, the area transformed into one of the city’s busiest retail corridors. The nearby Amazon fulfillment center, outlet mall, and residential growth turned this stretch of land into a hub of activity. H-E-B’s arrival adds to that momentum, continuing a transformation that began nearly a century ago.
