Construction is now underway on the highly anticipated 400 Horses Casino in Polson, Montana. A groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 9, 2025, marking the official launch of the project. The new gaming destination is being developed by S&K Gaming, operated under the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). Once complete, it will serve as a new entertainment hub for residents and visitors along Highway 93.
The casino is being built on open land just west of Bear Harbor Condominiums, directly across from The Shoe – Lakeview Dining & Spirits. The location is highly accessible from Irvine Flats Road and offers lake views, visibility from the highway, and proximity to Polson Airport. The project is being constructed in phases, with the first opening targeted for June 2026.
Project Scope and Economic Impact
The first phase will include a 35,000-square-foot casino, with future additions planned for a hotel and event center. Once open, the facility will create around 75 new jobs and support economic growth in Lake County. It will also complement the existing KwaTaqNuk Resort & Casino, another CSKT-owned property on Flathead Lake.
Revenue from the 400 Horses Casino is expected to help fund tribal government services and community programs. For CSKT, this is more than just a casino—it is a long-term investment in economic sustainability and cultural visibility. Local officials and tribal leaders view it as a symbol of growth and opportunity for the entire region.
Honoring the Land’s Legacy
The casino’s name pays tribute to Chief Alexander of the Pend d’Oreille Tribe, who once lived on this land. He was known for having one of the largest horse herds in the area during the 1800s. The name “400 Horses” recognizes that legacy while tying it to a modern vision for tribal self-determination.
This area of Polson, once made up of open prairie and tribal lands, has seen a mix of tourism-focused and residential growth in recent decades. What was once quiet farmland has evolved into a blend of lakefront condos, RV resorts, and recreational areas. The addition of the 400 Horses Casino marks a major shift in land use and economic activity along this scenic corridor.
