A new ALDI supermarket is under development at 915 E Shotwell Street in Bainbridge, Georgia. The site, which most recently housed a Winn-Dixie, is being converted into an ALDI. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-2025. The building, constructed in 1988, is located in the Market Square shopping center. It also includes adjacent retail space available for lease.
Approximately 26,900 square feet of nearby space is listed on the market, along with 140 feet of street frontage and access to a monument sign. The existing structure will be retained, with modifications expected to reflect ALDI’s standard store layout and operations.
History and Development of the Location
This part of Bainbridge remained undeveloped for several decades. In 1957, the site was covered with trees and sat within a largely residential section of town. By 1984, aerial imagery shows the lot still vacant, with no commercial activity visible. That changed by 1988, when the current structure was built.
The property had become part of Bainbridge’s expanding retail corridor and was operating as a grocery store by the early 1990s. It served the area for decades under the Winn-Dixie brand before closing in November 2024, following corporate restructuring and property divestments.
ALDI’s Expansion and Replacement Strategy
The Bainbridge location is one of several former Southeastern Grocers properties being converted into ALDI stores. ALDI began acquiring select Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket sites across the Southeast in 2023, with plans to open in communities where it previously had little to no presence. These conversions allow the retailer to expand efficiently by reusing existing grocery infrastructure.
While some locations are being demolished and rebuilt, the Bainbridge store will adapt the original 1988 structure for its operations. This reflects ALDI’s broader strategy of using modest, cost-effective formats while entering new markets with established customer bases.
