A New Fitness Center Will Replace This Former Discount Store in Conroe, Texas

Montgomery Plaza is swapping bargain bins for barbells. A Crunch Fitness gym is moving into the 43,456‑square‑foot space that 99 Cents Only left behind in 2025. Construction is scheduled to start in September 2025 and is expected to be completed by February 2026. Once the work is complete, the former discount store will be transformed into a full-fledged gym, complete with treadmills, weights, and fitness classes.

From Forest to Shopping Plaza

In 1930, this corner of Conroe was nothing but trees. Historic aerials show an unbroken forest with no signs of the plaza to come.

By 1983, Montgomery Plaza appeared along the I‑45 frontage road. A small cluster of buildings and a wide parking lot marked the start of retail in this area. Over the years, the center added Academy Sports + Outdoors, Petco, and several restaurants and banks. Today, the outlots include Starbucks and Culver’s, making the plaza a reliable stop for both locals and highway travelers.

Crunch Fitness Opens in 2026

The upcoming gym will breathe new life into the empty anchor space. Once the doors open in early 2026, expect a mix of early‑morning joggers, weightlifters, and coffee drinkers all sharing the lot.

The project shows how older retail spaces can adapt to new trends. Where discount shelves once stood, Montgomery Plaza will soon have a full‑service gym serving the growing Conroe community.— and Montgomery Plaza isn’t done evolving yet.
