Aldi is preparing to open a new store at 3008 Holiday Drive in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. According to Google, the grand opening is scheduled for July 23, 2025. The store is replacing a former Winn-Dixie in the General De Gaulle Shopping Center, a large West Bank retail plaza anchored by Ross Dress for Less, T.J. Maxx, and Petco.
Although some retail sources previously marked the site as converted earlier in the year, there is no evidence the store has opened to the public. Aldiโs official website still lists it as โComing Soon,โ and no ribbon-cutting announcements have been posted.
What the Aerial Timeline Shows
Historic imagery shows the lot was mostly undeveloped through the 1960s and early 1980s. MacArthur Boulevard and surrounding neighborhoods were already in place, but the current shopping center footprint had not yet been constructed.
The first appearance of the modern layout dates back to 2002, featuring large anchor buildings, a central parking lot, and a shape that matches todayโs center. While LoopNet lists the centerโs construction year as 1973, this may refer to an earlier phase or structure on the site. The visible layout suggests a significant redevelopment occurred in the late 1990s or early 2000s.
Replacing Winn-Dixie with ALDI
The space now set to house ALDI was previously occupied by Winn-Dixie store #1426, one of several Louisiana locations included in a broader sale to ALDI. Corporate records show the site was designated for conversion in early 2025.

This is not a remodel of an older ALDI store, but a full takeover of a legacy grocerโs space. ALDI is customizing the site to match its typical store layout and operations. The new location will expand the chainโs presence on the West Bank, offering a lower-cost grocery option in a high-traffic area already familiar to local shoppers.
