Universal Epic Universe opened on May 22, 2025, becoming Universal Orlando Resort’s third major theme park and one of its boldest expansions yet. The park spans more than 110 acres of attractions on a 750-acre site near the intersection of Universal Boulevard and the extended Kirkman Road.
What Was on the Land Before Epic Universe?
The site was once dense woodland and largely untouched, as aerial imagery from 1952 shows. By 1980, light road construction had begun, and in the 2000s the land sat mostly vacant or used for limited industry. By 2021, grading and construction reshaped the area into the foundation for today’s park.
The Park’s Main Attractions
Epic Universe is built around Celestial Park, a garden-themed central hub with rides like Constellation Carousel and the headline dual-launch coaster, Stardust Racers. Surrounding it are four themed lands:
- Dark Universe – inspired by Universal’s classic monsters.
- Super Nintendo World – home to Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge and Donkey Kong: Mine Cart Madness.
- How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk – a Viking village with dragon-themed coasters.
- The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic – set in 1920s Paris with new storylines tied to the wizarding world.
Since opening, Stardust Racers has drawn attention not only for its speed and design, but also for a tragic fatality in September 2025. The ride is currently closed pending further review.
Access, Hotels, and Guest Stays
The $1 billion Kirkman Road extension was completed in 2024, directly connecting the park to I-4 and existing Universal resorts. New hotels include:
- Universal Helios Grand Hotel (inside the park)
- Universal Stella Nova Resort
- Universal Terra Luna Resort
Together, they add over 2,000 rooms to Universal’s lodging network.
Safety and Controversy
On September 17, 2025, a 32-year-old guest died after riding Stardust Racers. An autopsy listed the cause as multiple blunt impact injuries. State inspectors confirmed the ride’s equipment was functioning normally, and Universal stated that all systems operated as intended. The guest’s preexisting spinal injury may have been a factor, though investigations continue.
Separate lawsuits related to ride injuries have already surfaced, with at least one case settled within days of filing. For now, Stardust Racers remains closed as officials and Universal weigh the next steps.
What Visitors Are Experiencing Now
Epic Universe has quickly become a major draw for Orlando tourism. Guests can move between its five immersive lands through a hub-and-spoke layout designed to handle high traffic. Previews earlier in 2025 drew sold-out crowds, and demand remains strong as fans experience Universal’s latest step in competing with Disney’s Orlando dominance.
