A New Wegmans Opened This Year in Rockville, Maryland: How is it Doing?

When we first covered this project in April 2025, construction was nearing completion at 1590 Rockville Pike. Wegmans had announced its plans to anchor the new Twinbrook Quarter development, and the opening date was already set. That date has now passed, and the store is officially open.

Wegmans opened to the public on June 25, 2025, as confirmed by their official press release. The store spans 80,000 square feet and includes two levels of underground parking, offering 90 minutes of free access. Shoppers have access to fresh produce, meats, seafood, hot bars, grab-and-go meals, and Meals-To-Go. Drive-up lanes for curbside pickup are operational, and Wegmans has staffed the location with around 400 employees.

This Site Replaced a Strip Retail Center Dating Back to the 1970s

The current grocery store sits on land previously occupied by a strip retail center, visible in aerial images going back to the 1970s. By the early 2000s, the site included large surface parking lots and several low-rise commercial buildings. Known tenants included the Salvation Army Family Store & Donation Center.

These structures were cleared in the early 2020s to begin construction on the current development.

Wegmans Shares the Site with The Milton Apartments

The Rockville Wegmans is located at the base of The Milton, a newly opened apartment complex that shares the same parcel. This project is part of the broader Twinbrook Quarter, a multi-phase development that includes retail, housing, and eventually office space.

The site connects directly to the Twinbrook Metro Station on the Red Line and is near I-270, I-495, and other major corridors. Twinbrook Quarter aims to create a walkable, transit-friendly district with additional phases planned in the coming years.
