Back in February, we covered Target’s plans for a new Springfield store. Construction has been moving forward at the southeast corner of West Sunshine Street and West Bypass, but months later, the company has yet to announce when it will open.
Construction
The 148,000-square-foot store is part of a larger retail development on Springfield’s west side. Reports earlier this year noted that walls were already rising, confirming steady progress. Target’s corporate “Upcoming Stores” page continues to list the project as “future,” with no official timeline for completion.
Location
This section of Springfield has transformed from open fields in the 1990s into a busy retail corridor. The Target site is positioned at one of the city’s major intersections, expected to draw shoppers from across the region once doors finally open.

Target background
Target operates nearly 2,000 stores across the United States. New locations typically include grocery, clothing, electronics, and home goods, along with Starbucks cafes and drive-up pickup. The Springfield project is designed as a full-size store, extending the chain’s reach into mid-sized metro markets.
