It’s official: the Winn-Dixie at 1061 U.S. 280 East in Alexander City has closed. The long-running grocery store wrapped up operations in February 2025, and it didn’t take long for the next chapter to begin. Discount grocery giant ALDI has already claimed the address on its official site, listing it as “coming soon.” This marks a major shift for a site that’s anchored this stretch of U.S. 280 since the mid-1990s.

This Shopping Center Has History

Back in 1986, the site was still nothing but trees—no pavement, no parking lot, not even a driveway. By the time we hit 1997, the transformation was complete. A full shopping center stood in place, anchored by the very same building that just housed Winn-Dixie. According to LoopNet, the property was built in 1996 and spans over 55,000 square feet.

This 2024 photo shows the Winn-Dixie at 1061 U.S. 280 East in full operation, less than a year before its closure. The grocery store officially shut down in February 2025 and will be converted into an ALDI.

For nearly three decades, Winn-Dixie operated at this address. Locals came here for their weekly groceries, last-minute dinners, and everything in between. A Dollar Tree sits just a few doors down, and the overall layout of the plaza has remained largely unchanged since opening.

Here Comes ALDI — But Not Alone

ALDI will be taking over part of the space previously occupied by Winn-Dixie, but not the entire thing. Leasing materials indicate that the building will be divided into two separate units. ALDI is expected to occupy approximately 25,000 to 26,000 square feet, which is consistent with the chain’s typical store size.

That leaves another 27,000+ square feet available for a second tenant. The remaining space is being actively marketed to potential retailers, though no new occupant has been announced yet. This means Alexander City could eventually see another business join ALDI in revitalizing the old Winn-Dixie footprint.

Only One ALDI ‘Coming Soon’ in Alabama

As of now, Alexander City is the only ALDI location in Alabama listed as “coming soon.” This isn’t part of a mass statewide rollout—at least not yet. The store’s inclusion follows ALDI’s acquisition of Winn-Dixie’s parent company, which included plans to convert dozens of Southeastern stores.

The building is expected to be remodeled, not demolished. An opening date hasn’t been announced yet, but with the closure already behind us, the conversion process is likely well underway.
