A new Wendy’s restaurant is proposed for 902 N. 77 Sunshine Strip in Harlingen, Texas. A recent construction filing outlines plans for a 1,775-square-foot fast-food restaurant with a drive-thru and a 506-square-foot walk-in cooler. If the project moves forward as filed, construction would begin in June 2025 and finish by December 2025. The total building size is expected to be 2,281 square feet.
The address is currently home to a vacant commercial building constructed in 1981. The one-story structure was previously used as a bank and sits on a 0.68-acre lot. The building remains standing as of early 2025 and is listed for sale.

Sunshine Strip Location Has Evolved Over Decades
Historic aerials show that the site was part of farmland during the 1930s. Organized rows of crops filled the land during that time. By the 1960s, suburban development had reached the area with several buildings and streets appearing nearby.
By 1983, the Sunshine Strip had transitioned into a commercial corridor. Retail stores, offices, and paved lots replaced much of the open farmland. The corridor remains a major business destination in Harlingen today.
Project Status Remains in Early Stages
The Wendy’s restaurant is listed through a construction filing and has not been officially announced by the company. Timelines, design plans, and other project details may be updated as development progresses.
For now, the filing points to the possibility of new construction at this key Harlingen location, adding to the Sunshine Strip’s established retail landscape.
