In October 2019, a powerful tornado swept through North Dallas, hitting businesses along Marsh Laneโincluding the El Rancho Supermercado. The store sustained significant damage that forced it to close while repairs were made.
Widespread Damage Along Marsh Lane
The tornado left a wide path of destruction, damaging rooftops, signage, and building facades across the area. El Ranchoโs location at Marsh and Walnut Hill was among the hardest hit. Neighboring stores, including DDโs Discounts and a Wendyโs across the street, also faced heavy damage. Cleanup efforts began quickly, with emergency crews securing the site and blocking off unsafe sections.
Repairs Lead to a Full Reopening in 2020
For months, El Rancho sat closed as construction crews repaired the building. Damage to the roof and exterior walls required extensive work, but the structure itself remained standing. Restoration moved quickly, with clear progress visible by early 2020. The shopping center around it slowly came back to life as more businesses reopened or made long-term decisions about recovery.
By March 2020, El Rancho reopened to the public. The store returned with repairs completed and resumed its role in the neighborhood. While some nearby businesses never reopened, El Ranchoโs return marked a turning point for the shopping center and the wider Marsh Lane corridor.
