A new Target store is planned for 325 US Highway 202 in Raritan Township, New Jersey, just outside Flemington Borough. According to Target’s official store locator, the upcoming store will span approximately 75,525 square feet and sit at the former Burlington site near the Flemington Circle.
Township planning documents confirm that the existing building will be demolished to make way for the new Target. The Raritan Township Planning Board approved the application in January 2024, authorizing a new structure and updated site circulation.
From farmland to Burlington: A site shaped by retail history
Aerial imagery from HistoricAerials.com shows that the property was still undeveloped farmland in 1972. By 1984, the site had been transformed into a large commercial building and expansive parking lot, marking its emergence as a retail anchor.
Street-level imagery from Google Street View (2008, 2016, and 2022) shows the structure consistently occupied by Burlington Coat Factory. Signage appeared prominently on both the building and the shopping center monument sign. The store remained at this location through at least 2022 before closing.
What’s next for the property
Target’s approved plan includes a complete demolition of the current structure, a new parking lot design, upgraded stormwater systems, and refreshed landscaping and lighting. One pad site near the entrance will be left available for future commercial development.
As of now, no construction timeline or opening date has been shared by Target or the township.
