It’s been a year since Publix opened at 572 Hank Aaron Drive in Atlanta, a key element of an 80-acre redevelopment by Carter, K. King & Company, and Healey Weatherholtz Properties. The 50,000-square-foot store marked the end of Summerhill’s food desert status, fulfilling a long-standing community need.
Since the opening on June 21st last year, Publix has been a significant part of Summerhill’s transformation, alongside more than 1,000 new residential units and the repurposing of Turner Field into Georgia State University’s football stadium. The Summerhill Station development also includes eateries like Cava, Rusty Taco, Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Piedmont Urgent Care by WellStreet, and AT&T, with nearly 87,000 square feet of retail space across four acres.
Summerhill Publix Location History
Aerial photographs from as far back as 1938 show the area teeming with suburban homes. However, the landscape dramatically changed in the 1960s when Interstate 85 was constructed, slicing through the neighborhood.
Around the same time, the Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was erected, transforming the area primarily into a parking lot.
