Brooklyn’s closed Modell’s on Church Avenue will soon be home to a new 28,000 square foot Target Store. Modell’s filed for bankruptcy and liquidated it’s stores in 2020. Shortly after, Target signed a lease with Solomon Cohen, the property owner.
The new Target has faced some resistance from some members of the community with fear that it will be detrimental to small businesses in the area as well as speed up gentrification.

The building was built in 1928 as the Keith-Albee Kenmore Theatre and later became the RKO Kenmore Theatre. It was designed by Italian-born architect Eugene DeRosa and had a huge 60ā domed ceiling.
In 1999 the theater was closed after a gang related shooting killed one person and injured two people. Three years later it was repurposed as a Modell’s Sporting Goods store.
