Goodbye to This Classic McDonald’s in Northwest Dallas

A longtime McDonald’s location in Northwest Dallas is now closed and preparing for a complete rebuild. The restaurant at 2197 W Northwest Hwy is listed as “temporarily closed” on Google Maps, and a recent TDLR filing confirms that demolition and reconstruction are scheduled to begin in September 2025. The new structure will cover 3,904 square feet and is expected to be completed by October.

This location has served a high-traffic area near TX Spur 348 for decades. While it remained operational as recently as six months ago, satellite imagery now shows the site closed, and the building will soon be replaced entirely. The new design will likely reflect McDonald’s current prototype, with dual drive-thru lanes and a more modern, efficient layout.

History of the Site

In 1946, the property was little more than open land, bordered by rural roads. The highway appeared by the 1960s, but the site itself remained vacant through the 1970s. By 1989, aerial images confirm the presence of the existing McDonald’s, suggesting it was likely constructed in the early-to-mid 1980s.

That original building has lasted more than 35 years, matching the lifespan of many McDonald’s units built in that era. The surrounding area has transitioned heavily from sparse development to a mix of commercial, industrial, and restaurant uses.

About McDonald’s

McDonald’s is one of the most recognizable fast-food chains globally, with over 13,000 locations across the U.S. alone. The rebuild in Dallas is part of the company’s ongoing effort to modernize older buildings for speed, efficiency, and an improved customer experience, especially in drive-thru-heavy markets like Texas.
