Trader Joe’s Will Open Its 2nd Oklahoma City Store at This Location

Trader Joe’s is preparing to open a new store in northwest Oklahoma City. The new location will be at 6920 Northwest Expressway, inside the Rockwell Northwest shopping center. The store will be the second Trader Joe’s in the city, joining the established Nichols Hills Plaza location to the east.

The upcoming store will occupy a 15,534-square-foot space formerly home to Party City. Construction is not yet complete, but the company has listed the address on its website as “Coming Soon.” Several reports also confirm this is part of Trader Joe’s expansion into six southern states. While an opening date has not been shared, the store is expected to launch sometime in 2025.

The Shopping Center’s History and Ongoing Growth

The Rockwell Northwest center was built in 1985. Aerial imagery from 1984 shows the site in early construction stages. Before then, the area remained largely undeveloped with sparse road access and no commercial structures.

In the decades since, the site evolved into a busy shopping plaza anchored by Hobby Lobby and Burlington. Other current tenants include JoAnn Fabrics, B-Sew Inn, and QDOBA. The center is positioned along the high-traffic Northwest Expressway, just east of N Rockwell Avenue, making it a convenient stop for nearby neighborhoods and commuters.

A Strategic Location for the City’s Second Trader Joe’s

Trader Joe’s will join a corridor already home to Target, ALDI, Chick-fil-A, and Crumbl Cookies. The area is one of Oklahoma City’s most active retail zones, surrounded by dense housing and apartment developments.

With a large parking lot, high visibility, and access from multiple directions, the Rockwell Northwest location offers a strong site for Trader Joe’s continued growth in the region. Once open, it will bring the grocer’s signature private-label goods and curated selection to the northwest side of the city.
