A New Chapter for Lima Mall

The former Macy’s store closed in 2021, leaving a large gap at Lima Mall. Now, Target is stepping in to demolish the building and construct a brand-new store. The company purchased the 9-acre property for $4.5 million and will soon begin redevelopment.

Target has not yet announced an official opening date, but the project is listed on the retailer’s website as an upcoming location.

Lima Mall’s History and Changes Over Time

Lima Mall opened in 1965, transforming what was once open farmland into a major shopping destination. Early aerial images from 1956 show the site as a rural area with scattered homes and trees. By 1971, the mall had taken shape, with Sears, JCPenney, Lazarus, and The Leader as original anchors.

Over the years, the mall went through multiple renovations and ownership changes. However, the rise of online shopping and retail shifts led to major closures, including Elder-Beerman (2016), Sears (2018), and Macy’s (2021). In 2023, Kohan Retail Investment Group purchased the mall, signaling a push for redevelopment.

What This Means for Lima’s Retail Scene

The arrival of Target is expected to boost foot traffic at Lima Mall, providing new shopping options and revitalizing the area. The project will also create about 200 jobs, boosting the local economy.

Target stores typically feature a full grocery section, apparel, home goods, and electronics, making this location a one-stop shop for Lima residents.

When Will Target Open?

The timeline for opening remains unclear. Demolition of the old Macy’s building will take place before construction begins. As the project moves forward, more details on the opening date will be announced.

For now, Lima shoppers can look forward to finally having a Target store in town, filling a long-standing retail gap.
