New Costco in Denton County—What Locals Are Saying Now

Costco officially opened its Prosper, Texas warehouse on March 14, 2025. Located at 5620 W University Drive, the store brought in large crowds from day one. Now, nearly two weeks later, early feedback is starting to paint a fuller picture of what shoppers think—and what’s next for the area.

Strong Early Reviews, But Traffic Concerns Emerge

Shoppers have given the store a solid 4.6-star rating on Google, based on over 60 reviews. Visitors mention helpful staff, a wide product selection, and a clean layout. The food court and self-checkout lanes have also earned positive mentions.

But not everything is smooth. Several local posts on Reddit and Facebook have flagged a big concern: traffic. The Costco sits just off U.S. Highway 380, already a busy corridor. One Reddit user noted the area could become a “clusterfork” as nearby developments like H-E-B open in the future.

The Costco gas station is also drawing big crowds. Reviewers on GasBuddy praised the design, including indicator lights that show open pumps. But long lines and congestion are becoming a daily challenge.

A Big Change for the Site—and the Community

Just a few years ago, this stretch of land on the western edge of Prosper was mostly empty, dotted with fields and new home construction. Now, it’s a commercial hub. Costco’s arrival signals more change ahead. Local businesses are already tying in—with Salute Italian Restaurant announcing their gift cards are now sold at the warehouse.

This new Costco is part of a broader regional push. Two other North Texas locations opened the same day—in Georgetown and Forney—marking a significant expansion.

Historical Evolution of the Site

Historically, the intersection of FM 1385 and US 380 in Prosper remained largely undeveloped. Aerial images from 1938 show a completely undeveloped area. Even as recently as 2001, the location remained untouched, surrounded by farmland.

As the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex expanded northward, Prosper experienced significant growth, transforming from a quiet rural community into a bustling suburb. This development paved the way for major retailers to establish a presence in the area.
