A new ALDI store is set to open at 785 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, bringing a full-service grocery option back to the downtown area. The official store page lists a grand opening for April 10, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., with a ribbon-cutting event at 8:30 a.m. A preview shopping day is scheduled for April 9.
Opening day will include giveaways for the first 100 shoppers and a limited-time sweepstakes. However, the development is even more significant for its location—one that has long lacked a full-sized grocery store.
From Longstanding Retail to Vacancy and Redevelopment
The building at 785 Union Avenue was previously occupied by Office Depot, which closed sometime after 2019. Aerial imagery from 1997 shows the site as under development at that time, replacing earlier buildings visible as far back as 1960. Prior to that, the lot had been occupied for decades, consistent with the surrounding area’s deep institutional and commercial roots.
After Office Depot’s closure, the building sat vacant, with no major tenant until ALDI’s announcement. The structure has since been renovated and repurposed to fit the grocery chain’s current design standards.
Located in the Memphis Medical District, the site is near major intersections, hospitals, and landmarks like Sun Studio. Its visibility along US-79 and proximity to Midtown and Downtown make it a strategic location.
