Williams Square in Las Colinas, Irving, is best known for its centerpiece — the Mustangs of Las Colinas. The 1.4 million-square-foot office complex was completed in 1985 and sold to the Brookdale Group in 2012. The plaza has recently been renovated into a park-like public space, giving new life to one of North Texas’s most recognizable landmarks.
The Mustangs of Las Colinas
The bronze sculpture was commissioned in 1976 by developer Ben H. Carpenter and unveiled on September 25, 1984. Created by artist Robert Glen, it shows nine wild mustangs crossing a granite stream. At 1.5 times life-size, it is often called the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. Fountains beneath the horses create the illusion of splashing water, though these effects are sometimes turned off during maintenance or renovation. A nearby exhibit space provides more history of the project and the artist.
Williams Square Towers
Surrounding the plaza are the four towers of Williams Square, which total about 1.4 million square feet of office space. Construction began in 1981 and wrapped up in 1985, anchoring the emerging Las Colinas development. The buildings include a 26-story centerpiece flanked by shorter towers. The Brookdale Group, based in Atlanta, purchased the property in 2012. The recent plaza renovation replaced much of the granite hardscape with greenery, seating, and walkways to make it more inviting.
Visiting Today
The Mustangs remain one of the top attractions in Irving and a highlight of the Dallas–Fort Worth area. The plaza sits next to Mandalay Canal and is a short distance from Toyota Music Factory, making it easy to plan a day trip around the area.
