New Target Nearing Completion at Former K-Mart Site in Jersey City

Jersey City’s west end is finally seeing progress at Stadium Plaza, where a new Target store is rising on the site of the former Big K-Mart. The K-Mart closed in 2018 after nearly four decades in operation, and by 2023 the property had approvals for redevelopment into a single-story Target.

Construction Progress

The project calls for a 119,387-square-foot Target with 515 parking spaces and 34 bicycle spots. Demolition of the old K-Mart wrapped up in 2024, with foundation and site work following soon after. By April 2025, aerial images show heavy equipment on site, the store footprint in place, and parking lot work underway. An official opening date has not yet been announced, but the pace of construction suggests late 2025 or early 2026.

Location

The store is taking shape at 321 Stadium Plaza, just off Route 440 and near the Kellogg Street intersection. The development is part of the Stadium Plaza Shopping Center, which has served the west side of the city for decades. To the south once stood Roosevelt Stadium, home to everything from baseball games to concerts before its demolition in 1985. Today, that land is the residential community of Society Hill.

Company

Target, based in Minneapolis, operates nearly 2,000 stores across the U.S. The retailer has been expanding in dense urban markets with flexible formats, ranging from compact neighborhood locations to large suburban footprints like this one planned for Jersey City. Once complete, the store is expected to serve as a new anchor for Stadium Plaza, bringing more retail activity back to the site after years of vacancy.
