A cleared lot in Houston’s Heights neighborhood is set to become the first local outpost for Terry Black’s Barbecue, a Texas chain with locations in Austin, Dallas, and Lockhart. Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2025, according to state filings, with the new restaurant expected to be complete by June 2026.
The project includes an 8,321-square-foot build, split between a 7,066-square-foot main restaurant and a 1,255-square-foot pit house. Based on the latest aerial image from March, the lot remains empty with no signs of construction activity. The total estimated cost is $6.5 million.
A New Era for a Familiar Site
This property was previously home to H.I.D. Auto Co., a small, single-story business with a striped metal façade and surface parking. That structure was demolished earlier this year. Aerial imagery from March confirms the lot has been cleared in preparation for redevelopment.
Looking further back, the site was once part of a residential grid. Aerial photographs from the 1940s show small houses on this block, which gradually gave way to commercial and mixed-use buildings by the late 20th century. The surrounding area has continued to evolve, with a Ford dealership across the street and recent townhome developments nearby.
About Terry Black’s Barbecue
Terry Black’s Barbecue was established in Austin in 2014 by twin brothers Mark and Michael Black, sons of Terry Black and members of the well-known Lockhart barbecue family. The restaurant is known for its post oak–smoked brisket, beef ribs, sausage, and traditional side dishes.
The company currently operates locations in Austin, Dallas, and Lockhart. The new build in Houston marks its first expansion into the city.
