The old Winn-Dixie at 2112 Belle Chasse Highway in Gretna, Louisiana, is getting a new lease on life. ALDI, the fast-growing discount grocer, is preparing to open a new location in the same space. The former Winn-Dixie closed its doors for good on November 17, 2024, and ALDI signage has since been added to the companyโs official store locator. No formal opening date has been announced yet.
A shopping center with a 1990s lookโbut not quite 1990s origins
The shopping center, known as Gretna Marketplace, appears in aerial imagery as early as 1998, fully built and operational. That contradicts several property listings that still claim a 2000 construction date. So either it opened quietly just before Y2K, or those โyear builtโ fields refer to something else, like a renovation. Before the plaza, the site was home to a mobile home park visible in 1970s aerials. There’s a gap in imagery between 1983 and 1998, so the transformation happened during that window.

From groceries to groceries, the anchor changesโbut the purpose stays
Winn-Dixie once occupied over 51,000 square feet at the center but vacated as part of the ALDIโSoutheastern Grocers transition. The plaza encompasses approximately 85,000 square feet of space on 8.5 acres. Although detailed brochures are no longer available online, past listings confirm 13 store spaces and high-traffic visibility from Belle Chasse Highway and Wall Boulevard. The new ALDI will likely repurpose the existing structure, as no major demolition has been recorded.
