New Buc-ee’s For Virginia: This is Where it Will Open

Construction is underway on Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s travel center, located at 838 Friedens Church Road in Rockingham County. The 74,000-square-foot building is rising just off Interstate 81 near Exit 240, south of Harrisonburg. Buc-ee’s has confirmed that the Rockingham location is expected to open by June 30, 2025.

According to Virginia Business and WHSV, this Buc-ee’s will include 120 gas pumps and over 20 EV charging stations. The development will create around 200 full-time jobs and bring one of Texas’ most iconic brands into a new market.

A Farmland Crossroads Prepares for Change

Historic aerial imagery from March 17, 1989, shows the site as uninterrupted farmland with rectangular crop fields. The location sat between the I-81 corridor and North River, with minimal development nearby.

Today, the area has grown into a logistics hub. The future Buc-ee’s sits across from a Walmart distribution center and near Danone North America’s facilities. A recent image from February 9, 2024, reveals major land clearing and early construction activity on site.

Road connections have improved significantly over time, particularly around VA-257, making the site more accessible to both local and interstate traffic.

What’s Next for the Site and the Region

This location will serve as Buc-ee’s flagship entry point into Virginia, with future sites planned in New Kent and Stafford Counties. The Rockingham store’s high-visibility location on a major interstate makes it a key part of the company’s eastward expansion strategy.

As construction progresses, the site is expected to become a major draw for travelers and regional visitors. The location is already marked on Google Maps as the “Future Site of Buc-ee’s,” attracting attention from curious locals and fans of the brand.

SprawlTag will continue to monitor the project and provide updates as the June 2025 opening approaches.
