A new ALDI store is set to open at 1620 US-231 in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The location is listed as “opening soon” on ALDI’s official website. While no official opening date has been announced, the store structure is complete, and the site is marked as temporarily closed on Google Maps. It sits just east of US-231, north of Steak ‘n Shake, and shares a retail lot with a Home Depot.
ALDI has not confirmed a formal grand opening date. However, hiring efforts and construction status suggest it may open soon.
From Overgrowth to Grocery: The Site’s Transformation
Back in 1998, the site where ALDI now stands was wooded and undeveloped. Historical aerial imagery shows a dense line of trees and open grassland stretching behind what was then a much quieter stretch of US-231. The area east of the highway was mostly untouched, with commercial activity concentrated to the west.
Fast forward to today, and the lot has been cleared and developed into a prominent retail space. The new ALDI stands directly behind a Taco Bell and north of the now-operating Home Depot. The entire intersection has evolved into a busy commercial corridor with restaurants, auto dealerships, and big-box retail.
ALDI Joins a Rapidly Growing Retail Cluster
The ALDI joins a retail center that includes a Home Depot and multiple fast-food chains. It’s positioned in a highly visible spot along a major highway. The layout includes a dedicated structure for the grocery store, with surrounding space indicating room for parking and customer access.
ALDI is one of many retailers expanding in Indiana as part of a national growth push. Once the Crawfordsville store opens, it will serve a region that has seen significant retail growth in the past two decades.
