A new ALDI grocery store is scheduled to open this week at 1740 Carter Hill Road in Montgomery. The store is set to officially open on December 11, according to ALDIโs store locator, marking the next chapter for a property that has served as a neighborhood grocery site for decades.
The location replaces a former Winn-Dixie and continues the siteโs long-standing role as a supermarket anchor rather than introducing a new development.
A Grocery Store Has Anchored This Site Since 1991
Property records show the current grocery building was constructed in 1991. That aligns with historic aerial imagery, which indicates the site remained residential land into the 1970s, followed by clearing and later commercial development.
The shopping center that exists today did not emerge until the early 1990s, when the current supermarket building and parking lot were completed. Since then, the anchor structure and site layout have remained largely unchanged.
For more than 30 years, the property has functioned as a neighborhood grocery center, with the same building footprint serving multiple grocery operators over time.

From Winn-Dixie to ALDI
Street View imagery from 2023 shows the site still operating as a Winn-Dixie earlier this decade. After the closure of that location, the space was marketed as an ALDI sublease, signaling a grocery-to-grocery transition rather than a redevelopment.
Instead of demolishing the structure, ALDI reused the existing supermarket building, a strategy the company has used across the Southeast as it expands into former Winn-Dixie locations.
