Georgia’s largest industrial project is taking shape just outside Savannah. The Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), a $7.6 billion electric vehicle and battery facility, has already begun limited vehicle production while continuing to build out its full operations.
The site covers nearly 2,923 acres in Bryan County, near Interstate 16 and U.S. 280. At full scale, the plant is expected to employ 8,500 people, making it one of the largest single job creators in Georgia history.
A Massive Investment
The project broke ground in October 2022 and represents the biggest economic development deal ever announced in the state. It will produce Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis EV models along with batteries through a partnership with SK On. State and local governments committed more than $1 billion in incentives and infrastructure improvements to secure the development.

With its size and scope, the Hyundai facility anchors Georgia’s strategy to become a national leader in electric vehicle manufacturing, joining other projects such as Rivian’s plant in Morgan County.
Status as of 2025
According to Associated Press, the first vehicles rolled off the line in late 2024, marking the start of commercial production. The site continues to expand, with construction on the dedicated battery plant and additional facilities still underway. A grand opening ceremony was held in March 2025, signaling the start of long-term operations even as the project scales up in phases.
The Metaplant is expected to remain a centerpiece of Georgia’s economy for decades, reshaping the manufacturing landscape around Savannah and beyond.
