A new ALDI is on the way for 147 Ronkonkoma Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma, according to the retailer’s official “coming soon” listings. The store does not yet have a confirmed grand opening date, but it will bring another discount grocery option to the Ronkonkoma area.
A Plaza with History
The ALDI will open in an existing shopping plaza near Portion Road. Historic aerial images show the site’s long evolution:
- 1950s – Mostly vacant land with light tree cover.
- 1960s – Initial small-scale development appears.
- 1970s – The shopping center takes on its familiar layout, with a large anchor building and surface parking.
The plaza’s footprint has remained largely unchanged since the 1980s, reflecting its long-standing role as a neighborhood retail hub.
Redevelopment of a Former King Kullen
Local reporting indicates the project is a redevelopment of a former King Kullen store, consistent with the plaza’s retail history. ALDI continues to target older suburban centers like this for new locations.
No current images were found confirming construction progress or preparations for opening. Until ALDI announces an official date, the location remains in the “coming soon” category on the company’s website.
