A long-rumored Walmart Neighborhood Market is finally becoming reality in southern Tuscaloosa, nearly a decade after the site was first eyed for development. Located at the northwest corner of Alabama Highway 69 and Old Greensboro Road, the project is set to bring a full-service grocery store and fuel station to an area that’s been booming with retail growth.
Construction Well Underway at 8600 Hwy 69 South
Construction is actively progressing at the 42,000-square-foot site, directly across from CVS and Tractor Supply. Aerial images from 2014 show the area was mostly farmland at the time, while the most recent satellite imagery confirms the Walmart structure is already taking shape. The Tuscaloosa Thread reported that DBS Corp., based out of Chattanooga, is managing the $12 million project, with an additional $2.6 million allocated for a fuel station.
The land was previously zoned residential but was rezoned to commercial in July 2024 to accommodate the development. This is Tuscaloosa’s second Walmart Neighborhood Market— the first opened on Hargrove Road East back in 2015.
Rebranded Design, Familiar Name
This new location comes amid Walmart’s shift in branding, where “Neighborhood Market” stores are being updated with blue and yellow signage, replacing the traditional green. Some locations will now simply carry the “Walmart Market” label or display the name of the city instead. No word yet on whether the Tuscaloosa store will follow suit, but based on renderings and recent builds, it’s likely.
Locals can expect the store to open by mid-June 2025, barring any delays. Combined with its high-traffic intersection and adjacent retailers like Taco Casa and Valley View Baptist Church, this new Walmart Market is positioned to become a key grocery stop in the region.
