This move is part of ALDI’s bigger takeover plan across the South. They’ve been snapping up older grocery spots, gutting the interiors, and giving them a fresh, minimalist look. Gulfport’s store will follow the same formula: tight layout, house-brand focus, and prices that aim to undercut just about everyone. If you’re used to Winn-Dixie’s wide aisles and name brands, this will feel different—but that’s the point.
So What’s Changing Inside the Store?
No official floorplan has been posted yet, but if you’ve been to any newer ALDI, you know the setup: it’s all about efficiency. This center isn’t new. Built back in 1964 and updated in the 1990s, Orange Grove Shopping Center has anchored this part of Gulfport for decades. Historical aerials show it in place as early as 1982. The building that ALDI is moving into has long been the main draw—first as Winn-Dixie, and now soon as ALDI.
The location is a smart one. Just about a mile from I-10, the area sees heavy traffic—over 44,000 cars a day on Highway 49. There’s a strong mix of nearby neighborhoods and commercial sprawl, meaning this store will draw from both locals and passersby.
