A brand-new ALDI grocery store is set to open at 9954 Sierra Avenue in Fontana, California. Construction has been underway at the former Stater Bros. location, which closed in June 2023. ALDI will officially open to the public on April 10, 2025, with a sneak peek preview scheduled for the day before.
Shoppers can expect opening day celebrations, including a ribbon-cutting at 8:00 a.m. and giveaways for early visitors. The first 100 customers will receive a Golden Ticket worth up to $100 and a free bag filled with ALDI products.
From Rural Fields to Retail Center
The site’s transformation tells the story of Fontana’s growth. Back in 1938, this entire stretch of Sierra Avenue was made up of open farmland and dirt roads. By 1959, the grid for future development was forming, but the area remained mostly undeveloped.
Aerial photos show that by the 1980s, a large structure had been built at this address. That structure was later home to the Stater Bros. supermarket, which became a neighborhood staple for decades. The store’s tile roof and wide layout were typical of commercial developments from the late 1980s.
In 2018, Google Street View captured a busy parking lot with the Stater Bros. in full operation. But by 2024, the building sat vacant and faded. A “For Lease” sign stood out front, and the large lot appeared weathered from years of use.
New Life for a Familiar Plaza
The soon-to-open ALDI sits directly across from Kaiser Permanente’s medical campus, offering convenience for residents and employees. It will occupy the former Stater Bros. footprint and bring a modern, budget-friendly option to the longtime retail hub.
