A New ALDI Is Opening Soon in Louisiana: Here is The Location

A new ALDI supermarket is preparing to open at 17682 Airline Highway in Prairieville, Louisiana. The store replaces a former Winn-Dixie that closed in September 2024. ALDI has not yet announced a grand opening date, but the location is still listed under upcoming stores on the company’s official website.

The property spans 61,834 square feet and sits on 7.18 acres along one of the city’s busiest corridors. According to leasing documents, ALDI is converting a portion of the building for its own store and offering roughly 27,993 square feet for sublease. The property is zoned for mixed-use and has parking capacity for 338 vehicles.

This project is part of ALDI’s larger plan to expand across the Southeast by repurposing supermarket properties in established neighborhoods.

The Site’s Transformation Over Time

In 1989, the land east of LA 42 remained mostly rural. Aerial imagery from that time shows dense tree coverage and scattered residential lots. Some nearby commercial development had already begun southwest of the intersection, but the current grocery site remained untouched.

In 1989, the site was surrounded by trees and scattered homes, with little retail development along this stretch of LA 42.

By 1998, clearing and infrastructure work had started on the site. Residential neighborhoods were also expanding along newly built roads and cul-de-sacs nearby. That same year, the Winn-Dixie supermarket was constructed and opened for business, becoming one of the area’s primary grocery destinations.

By 1998, construction activity had begun at the site. Clearing and early grading work were visible as the area transitioned toward retail use.

Over the next two decades, Prairieville grew rapidly. The surrounding area filled in with additional retail centers, restaurants, and homes. The site now sits within a well-developed stretch of Airline Highway and serves a wide suburban population.

Why ALDI Is Taking Over Winn-Dixie Stores

ALDI’s arrival in Prairieville follows a broader strategy announced in 2023. That year, ALDI revealed plans to acquire hundreds of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations across the Southeast. The approach enables ALDI to expand quickly without building entirely new stores.

Instead of starting from scratch, the company repurposes existing retail infrastructure in locations where grocery demand is already high. These conversions are cost-effective and help ALDI enter established markets with minimal disruption.

The former Winn-Dixie property in Prairieville fits that model well. It offers an ideal footprint, ample parking, and a location near major roadways. The project reflects ALDI’s ongoing efforts to grow its store count across Louisiana and beyond.
