New Target Store Will Open in Grand Island Nebraska

A new Target store is under construction at 3404 W 13th Street in Grand Island, Nebraska. The 148,200-square-foot location is part of the Conestoga Marketplace redevelopment. Target has confirmed the site on its official store list. Construction began in late 2024 and continues into 2025, with the building’s wall panels already in place.

This new location marks Target’s return to the city after a long absence. Target previously operated in Grand Island but left the market in the late 1990s. Once completed, the store will serve as one of the new anchors in a larger retail center replacing the former Conestoga Mall.

History of the Site: From Farmland to Retail Center

Historic aerial images from 1951 show that the property was once undeveloped farmland. Grand Island’s westward expansion brought infrastructure and commercial activity to the site over the next few decades.

Conestoga Mall opened in 1974 as a fully enclosed shopping center. It included early anchors like Miller & Paine and Brandeis. Later, national retailers such as Sears, JCPenney, and Dillard’s moved in. The mall served as a retail destination for central Nebraska throughout the late 20th century.

By the 2010s, the property began to see a steady decline in foot traffic. As department store closures increased nationwide, the mall lost most of its major tenants. By 2023, the site was largely vacant, and the interior mall closed that May.

Redevelopment into Conestoga Marketplace

The former Conestoga Mall is being redeveloped into Conestoga Marketplace, a modern retail center with outward-facing storefronts. Omaha-based Woodsonia Real Estate purchased the site and announced a $250 million redevelopment plan in early 2023.

Concrete wall panels for the Target building began installation in late 2024. The full build-out is expected to continue through 2025. A specific opening date has not been announced.

While the interior portion of the former mall was closed in May 2023 and demolition began in June, several businesses on the property remained open. Stores like Best Buy, TJ Maxx, and Joann Fabrics continued operations throughout construction, as they occupied separate or exterior-facing spaces unaffected by the demolition.
