A New Trader Joe’s Is Coming to San Antonio—Here’s What We Know

San Antonio is getting another Trader Joe’s, and it’s moving into a familiar spot. A recent TDLR filing reveals plans for a 14,562-square-foot grocery store at Huebner Oaks Shopping Center, right off IH-10.

If the location sounds familiar, it’s because this spot was formerly a Bed Bath & Beyond, which shut down in July 2023 when the company closed stores nationwide. Now, that space appears to be divided, with Trader Joe’s taking Suite 7A (14,562 sq. ft.), while a larger 20,475-square-foot space (Suite 7) remains available for lease.

What’s Happening?

Here’s a quick rundown of the project details:

  • Location: 11745 IH-10 W, Suite 7A, San Antonio, TX 78230
  • Size: 14,562 sq. ft.
  • Project Type: Interior remodel for a grocery store
  • Construction Starts: June 2025
  • Expected Completion: December 2025

With an official completion date set for late 2025, San Antonio’s Trader Joe’s fans will need to be patient, but it’s exciting news for those looking for more locations in the area.

How This Location Has Changed Over the Years

Huebner Oaks wasn’t always the busy shopping center it is today. Looking at historical aerial images, you can see how the area evolved:

  • 1939: Just open land, trees, and no signs of major development.
  • 1995: Still mostly wooded, though IH-10 was already in place.
  • Late 1990s: The shopping center was built around 1996, transforming the area into a retail hub.
  • 2003-Present: The site has remained largely the same, with tenant shifts over time—Borders Books, AMC Huebner Oaks 24, and Bed Bath & Beyond all occupied parts of the center before making way for new retailers.

Now, with Trader Joe’s moving in, the site is evolving again. It’s a great example of how retail spaces adapt as shopping trends change.

A Divided Space, A New Tenant

What’s particularly interesting about this Trader Joe’s location is that it’s part of a split retail space. The former Bed Bath & Beyond occupied a much larger area, but after its closure, the unit appears to have been divided into two separate spaces.

Trader Joe’s will take Suite 7A, while Suite 7 (20,475 sq. ft.) is still available for lease. This could mean another major retailer or a new mix of businesses moving into Huebner Oaks. It’s worth keeping an eye on who fills the remaining space.

Why Huebner Oaks?

This location makes a lot of sense for Trader Joe’s. Huebner Oaks is already home to big-name retailers like Old Navy, Ross, and Eddie Bauer, plus a mix of restaurants and specialty shops. Parking is plentiful, and the spot sits right off IH-10, ensuring plenty of visibility and foot traffic.

This will be Trader Joe’s third San Antonio location, joining the existing stores at Quarry Village and Sonterra Village.

What’s Next?

With construction expected to begin in mid-2025, it’ll be a little while before shoppers can browse the aisles of this new Trader Joe’s. But for fans of the chain, having another location in Northwest San Antonio is something to look forward to.
