In October 2019, an EF-3 tornado struck North Dallas, causing over $1.5 billion in damage. Marsh Lane Plaza shopping center, at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and Marsh Lanes, was among the hardest-hit areas. The tornado destroyed the 75,000-square-foot plaza, leaving the community without a vital retail hub.
For months, the damaged shopping center remained untouched, resembling a war zone. In September 2020, the City of Dallas filed a lawsuit against the property owner, Hopkins Commercial Real Estate. The city cited numerous code violations and demanded cleanup. Subsequently, the shopping center was demolished, leaving an empty lot surrounded by a chain-link fence.
In January 2023, Hopkins Commercial Real Estate announced plans to rebuild Marsh Lane Plaza. The first phase of the development, encompassed 15,000 square feet. It would include tenants such as Jakes Burgers and Beer, Con Madre Kitchen, a dental practice, and much more. Construction was expected to take eight to ten months.
By July 2024, a significant portion of the rebuild was finished. The new Marsh Lane Plaza aimed to offer upscale choices and a family-friendly environment. The final stage of the property rebuild was expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
