Abercrombie & Fitch is set to open a new store at 235-237 Washington Street in Hoboken, New Jersey. This location was previously home to Arthur’s Tavern, a beloved steakhouse that closed in early 2022. The new store will occupy approximately 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of the Hoboken House. This is part of an 18-unit residential development that has revitalized the historic property.
History of the Location
The site at 235-237 Washington Street has a rich history. Originally known as the Hoboken House, it became Arthur’s Tavern in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Arthur’s Tavern was renowned for its 24-ounce Delmonico steaks and casual atmosphere.

In 2011, David and Wanda Jacey purchased Arthur’s Tavern. The restaurant continued to serve its famous garlic bread, griddled potatoes, and French onion soup until it closed for renovations in early 2022. Initially, there were plans to renovate and reopen the establishment. However, the property was eventually redeveloped into the Hoboken House, blending historic charm with modern amenities.
Evolution of the Location
Over the years, 235-237 Washington Street has transformed from a cherished local eatery into a modern mixed-use development. The transition from Arthur’s Tavern to the Hoboken House signifies the dynamic changes in Hoboken’s urban landscape, reflecting the city’s growth and the evolving needs of its residents.
