The 92,000-square-foot supermarket replaced a former office building and added a large-format grocery option along the Connecticut Avenue retail corridor.
The development was approved in 2022 and required demolition of the existing structure before construction began. The finished store includes structured parking and a full-service layout consistent with newer Wegmans locations.
Since opening, the Norwalk location has accumulated hundreds of customer reviews and continues to operate as a major grocery destination in the area.
The History of the Connecticut Avenue Site
Before redevelopment, the site was home to MBI Inc., a collectibles manufacturer. The company operated from a 107,000-square-foot office building before relocating to the Merritt 7 complex. The relocation cleared the way for demolition and redevelopment.
Going further back, aerial imagery from 1960 shows a large industrial-style building already occupying the site. Earlier imagery from 1934 shows a more open landscape with scattered trees and clearings. Over time, the property transitioned from open land to industrial use, then to office space, and now to a supermarket.
The changes reflect Norwalk’s broader commercial growth, particularly along Connecticut Avenue, which has evolved into a busy retail corridor.
Store Features and Reception
The Norwalk Wegmans includes prepared food stations, bakery and deli counters, and a large grocery selection typical of the chain’s newer stores. Structured parking was also included as part of the development.
Customer feedback since opening has generally been positive, with shoppers noting the store’s size, selection, and prepared foods. The location continues to operate in a competitive grocery market alongside long-established regional chains.
