What Happened to This Former Sears in Kaneohe, Hawaii?

The Windward Mall site in Kaneohe, Hawaii, looked very different in 1963, when much of the property remained undeveloped. The mall opened in 1982, with Sears later serving as one of its longtime anchors. Sears closed in 2019, leaving the prominent space available for redevelopment. We first covered Target’s plans for the former Sears space in November 2021, before construction was completed. Target welcomed its first shoppers in July 2023, completing one of the mall’s biggest recent transformations.

In June 2009, Sears remained open in its longtime anchor space at Windward Mall. Viewed from Haiku Road, the store still carried its familiar exterior signage, plain concrete walls, and red accent panels. Mature trees and hedges lined the property, while the building appeared maintained and fully operational. Sears would remain at the mall for another decade before closing in 2019.

By February 2025, Target had fully replaced the former Sears anchor at Windward Mall. Viewed from Haiku Road, the remodeled exterior featured Target’s red branding, larger glass entrances, and updated wall panels. The basic footprint remained recognizable, but the building had been modernized for its new tenant. Target had opened at the mall in July 2023.
