A new BJ’s Wholesale Club is expected to break ground at the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 77 and Hedgewood Drive in Waxahachie, Texas. The development received zoning approval from the Waxahachie City Council in December 2024. The project includes a full-service membership warehouse, a fueling station, and support services.
According to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, construction is scheduled to begin in June 2025. Completion is expected in January 2026. The total facility will span 106,844 square feet with an estimated construction cost of $9.5 million.
In addition to retail and grocery space, the site will include a tire center and propane service. The development will sit just north of Tom Thumb and Mountain Mike’s Pizza, in an area that has seen rapid commercial expansion in recent years.
Site History and Surrounding Development
The proposed store site has remained undeveloped for decades. Historical aerial imagery from 2001 shows the area as open farmland with a few surrounding structures, including nearby storage tanks. The land remained mostly unchanged for years, while growth slowly moved toward it from the south and east.
By 2023, the landscape had shifted. Commercial centers, restaurants, and new road infrastructure had filled in to the south. Residential neighborhoods expanded to the east, and major retailers like Tom Thumb opened nearby. Despite this growth, the future BJ’s parcel still appeared as a grassy field, with site signage indicating plans for development.
The transformation of this corner of Waxahachie is part of broader changes to the U.S. 77 corridor. What was once open space now supports retail, housing, and industrial uses, all within a few blocks of each other.
BJ’s Expansion into the Texas Market
Waxahachie is one of several locations in BJ’s Wholesale Club’s current Texas expansion. The company, which operates along the East Coast and parts of the Midwest, has identified North Texas as a key growth area.
Additional Texas locations have been announced in Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, and Forney. Each new location follows a similar development model: mid-sized warehouse buildings with integrated fuel stations, typically located near growing suburban corridors.
BJ’s is positioning these stores near major highways and new residential growth, targeting communities that already support large-format retailers.
