From Orchards to a New Trader Joe’s in Tarzana California

The site at 18700 Ventura Boulevard in Tarzana, California, has a rich history of transformation. In the mid-20th century, this area was primarily agricultural, characterized by orchards and open fields. As Los Angeles expanded, the landscape evolved to accommodate the growing suburban population.

By the 1960s and 1970s, the orchards gave way to residential neighborhoods and commercial developments. The construction of the Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) further spurred growth, making the San Fernando Valley more accessible and desirable for businesses and residents alike.

In 2009, the Village Walk Shopping Center was established at this location, featuring a variety of retail outlets. Whole Foods Market became a prominent tenant in 2010, serving the community’s grocery needs. However, in 2022, Whole Foods closed this location as part of a broader strategy to shutter underperforming stores.

In 2024, Trader Joe’s announced plans to open a new store in the former Whole Foods space, aiming to revitalize the shopping center and offer a unique grocery shopping experience to Tarzana residents. The store is expected to open in 2025, joining other Trader Joe’s locations in the San Fernando Valley.

This development reflects the area’s continuous adaptation to the needs and preferences of its community, transitioning from agricultural roots to a suburban hub with diverse retail offerings.
