This Former Winn-Dixie in Alabama Is Reopening As a New ALDI

For years, the Winn-Dixie at 9082 Moffett Road was a go-to grocery stop for Semmes residents. But that chapter officially closed on September 8, 2024, as part of ALDI’s major expansion into the Mobile metro area. Now, after months of renovation, the building is getting a fresh start. ALDI will open here on May 14, 2025.

A Look at the Store’s History

If you’ve lived in Semmes for a while, you might remember when this spot was just undeveloped land back in 1997. That changed in 2000, when Winn-Dixie built the supermarket that stood here for over two decades. The location became a staple in the community, offering groceries, a pharmacy, and a familiar shopping experience.

But in 2023, ALDI made big moves, acquiring Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets. This deal has reshaped grocery shopping in the Southeast. As part of the transition, some locations are keeping the Winn-Dixie name. While others—like this one in Semmes—are getting a full ALDI makeover.

What’s Changing?

If you’re used to shopping at ALDI, you already know what to expect. The Winn-Dixie pharmacy is gone, and in its place is ALDI’s signature simplified store layout, focusing on efficiency and affordability. The shelves will be stocked with private-label products, offering low prices on fresh produce, dairy, frozen foods, and pantry staples.

One big shift? No traditional checkout lanes. ALDI stores typically have fast-moving cashier stations. And don’t forget to bring a quarter for a shopping cart—a small deposit system that helps keep prices low.

A Bigger Retail Shift for Semmes

This transformation isn’t just about one store—it’s part of a larger trend in the Mobile metro area. ALDI has been growing rapidly, and its arrival in Semmes shows the company is betting big on this part of Alabama. With other discount chains like Lidl and Dollar General expanding, shoppers are seeing more competition and, hopefully, better deals.

As for the 9082 Moffett Road location, it remains a key retail hub. With Seafood King next door and the Semmes Regional Library nearby, the area continues to serve as a central stop for local shoppers.
