According to state filings, IKEA plans to complete a new store in Rockwall, Texas, by December 2025. Construction will begin in April 2025. This new location will be at Interstate 30 and Stodghill Road (FM 3549). It will become the third IKEA in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, joining stores in Grand Prairie and Frisco.
A Glimpse into Rockwall’s Rich History
Rockwall, established in 1854, is named after a unique underground rock formation discovered by settlers while digging wells. Early settlers initially thought the formation was man-made, but later studies confirmed it as natural sandstone dikes. Rockwall’s growth began with its location on the National Road of the Republic of Texas. By the late 1800s, the arrival of the railroad turned Rockwall into an agricultural and trade center. The introduction of Lake Ray Hubbard in 1969 further advanced its transformation.

Historical Context of the IKEA Site
The future IKEA site has transitioned significantly from farmland to a thriving urban corridor. Aerial imagery from 1956 reveals terraced farmland, used to prevent soil erosion and improve farming efficiency. These terraced patterns reflect Rockwall’s mid-20th-century agricultural history. By the 1980s, the area began shifting with suburban development, as residential and commercial zones expanded outward. The construction of Interstate 30 connected Rockwall to Dallas, accelerating its suburban growth and attracting businesses. Today, this site is surrounded by neighborhoods, warehouses, and retail hubs.
Modern Developments and Economic Growth
Rockwall has grown substantially in recent years, with a population increase of over 20% since 2020. Its proximity to Dallas and Lake Ray Hubbard makes it a highly desirable residential and business location. The new IKEA store highlights Rockwall’s economic growth and rising appeal as a retail and commercial center.
