A new small format Target will be opening soon in Union Square Manhattan New York. The store is replacing New York’s Food Emporium which closed it’s doors at this location in May 2021. Prior to the closing, Target got a nearly 16-year lease In 2020, and will now open a small store that will be approximately 33,000 square feet according to Target’s website.

The new Target will be on the ground floor of the 29 story Zeckendorf Towers, a condominium complex with 4 towers on the south east corner of Union Square. 

The Food Emporium

Food Emporium is a grocery store chain that was launched in 1979. It has 13 locations in New York and New Jersey.

Target Small Format Stores Features

Target has been opening new stores in areas where a full-size Target can’t fit and they plan on opening many small stores in the future. The small Targets range from as small as 13,000 square feet to approximately 50,000 square feet. In contrast, the bigger stores average about 130,000 square feet. They mostly sell the same goods as the bigger stores but in smaller packs.

Union Square Hotel

Union Square is a historic neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City and began as farmland. Before construction of the Zeckendorf Towers the location was home to the old Union Square Hotel which was razed to make way for the Zeckendorf condominiums in 1987.
